The Sanctuary is a multi-faith room in the new wing
of the hospital. The brief was that the design should be
abstract and strictly non-figurative. I have used blue for
its calming effect and to add a peaceful meditative quality
to the room. The gentle horizontal curves of the design
take the eye across both doors and have a soothing effect.
The glass is darker at the bottom and gradually becomes
paler at the top to allow in more light and to raise the
spirits. The doors are made using hand-blown acid-etched
glass that is laminated so there is no lead line, giving them
a more contemporary look. They are encapsulated in
sealed units.
I did the oil paintings to complement the doors, to bring the design into the room. The design suggests suspended space and the verticals give depth while the blues and the gentle waves create calm.

This is a good example of how paintings and glass can work well together. The paintings extend the effect of the glass into the room.
