PUBLIC: St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington

This window was a King's Fund Commission to cheer up this old people's ward. The brief was that it should not be an abstract design but have recognisable features, animals, nature and vibrant colours.

Various elements had been identified from the history of the hospital which were to be included:

  • The St. Mary's Penny - for the nurses
  • Fleur de Lys - symbol of the Hospital
  • Penicillin in Petri Dish - Alexander Fleming's Discovery at the Hospital
  • Horses going down the ramp - now part of the Mint Wing
  • Floral frieze - from tile border in the St. Mary's Hospital
It was a challenge to include all these elements in an aesthetically pleasing way whilst not destroying the integrity of the whole in the process. The nurses and patients have responded well to it and they even use some of the local scenes depicted as part of their reminiscence therapy!
